Overview / Responsibilities

Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions is seeking Junior and Intermediate Civil Designers.

Key responsibilities will include:

Working closely with engineers, technicians, technologists and project managers in preparation of document and drawing packages, report figures, design concepts, technical specifications and calculations

Processing the topographic data (from LiDAR, satellite, ground surveys, etc.) for use on the projects.

Providing civil design and drafting support for utility and industrial facilities and services, including buried and overland piping, pumping stations, access roadways, and spill containment systems

Preparing drawings for site development and earthworks including site preparation, rough grading, final grading and surface drainage, ditches, ponds, roads, embankments, and rail spurs using AutoCAD and Civil 3D programs

Preparing material take-offs

Managing time and tasks within allotted timelines and budgets

Providing assistance to design and construction teams

Skills / Qualifications

Minimum 2 (junior) to 5 (intermediate) years of relevant design experience relating to ports and marine, , mining, infrastructure and utilities

Diploma in Civil Engineering Design Technology

Excellent organizational, technical, writing, communication and computer skills

Experience in using AutoCAD and Civil 3D design/drafting software

Experience with the production of standard drawings for infrastructure projects including roadways, buried and overland piping, water and wastewater treatment plants and pump stations, storm drainage and retention / polishing ponds and ports.

Understanding various coordinate systems and geodetic elevation references

Experience with processing and modifying topographic data in various coordinate systems in support of project needs and establishing survey control for the projects

Drafting and design experience within a consulting engineering office environment

Ability to work efficiently and effectively when managing multiple tasks

Ability to work independently and in a multi-disciplinary team environment

Major Responsibilities

  • Provide geotechnical      engineering support to mine waste and tailings management projects
  • Carry out engineering data      analyses and design work for projects at stages ranging from scoping to      detailed engineering and construction
  • Possibly some travel to mine      sites to carry out geotechnical investigations, instrument installation,      and construction quality assurance for dams
  • Assist with planning and      supervising geotechnical subsurface investigations
  • Assist with writing      geotechnical reports and technical communications;
  • Provide support to senior      geotechnical engineer / geotechnical manager

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree      in Engineering (geotechnical, civil or a related field)

Registered as a Professional Engineer or Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T) with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)

  • minimum of 4 years of      experience (preference given to Oil & Gas [Oil Sands] experience in      large civil earthworks construction mining related projects, which      include: field construction, performance monitoring, construction quality      assurance, inspection and testing)
  • Perform field and      environmental investigations for Gas or Oil exploration and construction      development projects
  • Proficient in engineering      software (Geo-Slope; MineScape; AutoCAD; Microsoft Office)
  • Skilled in data      interpretation; analysis and correlation
  • Ability to work      independently as well as in a small team setting; and foster effective      working relationships with their peers
  • Previous experience in Oil      Sands operations will be an asset.

Key Qualifications for Position:

A recent graduate (within 1 year) with a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering with Majors in Geotechnical & Structural Engineering. Master’s Degree nice to have, but not a requirement.

GPA of 3.3 or higher, First or Upper Second Class Honors

Practical experience on a Construction Site or Farm, working around Heavy Machinery

Basic understanding of Hydraulics, Electrics and Electronics

Responsibilities

Preparation of conceptual layouts for multidisciplinary projects.

Preparation of preliminary and detailed design drawings including plans, profiles, typical cross-sections, geometrics and lining, drainage and utilities, spot elevations, signing and pavement markings, detours and construction staging.

Contributing to or preparing project documentation including design briefs, design criteria, engineering reports, drawings and specifications to summarize the approach taken and project relevant results.

Assistance in design of storm and sanitary sewers, water mains, and storm detention facilities.

Geometric design, template cross-sections and quantities computations using Excel.

Review and analyze design data and assistance in preparation of design criteria documents.

Preparation of 3D digital models of the proposed design.

Work closely with the team to produce bill of quantities, technical reports, and other project deliverables. 

Requirements

An undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized institution.

2+ years of civil engineering experience.

Eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer or an EIT with EGBC.

Ability to work independently.

Experience with CAD is mandatory and Civil 3D (asset) software and related standards.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills and a positive problem solving and collaborative approach.

Fluent in spoken and written English. French language skills considered an asset.

Experience with preparation of clear and comprehensive reports and technical notes.

Experience working on site during construction considered an asset.

Familiarity with development of project scope, schedule and budget.

Willingness and ability to travel on short-term assignments within Canada.

Responsibilities

Develop, implement and maintain business unit project records

Support the development of monthly/yearly resource and revenue forecasting and budgets and cost reporting.

Reporting to Project Managers divisional concerns, issues and performance of the project.

Respond to request for information / assist estimating in preparation of bids.

Communicate with the customer during project execution.

Site visits to projects on the oilsands region

Participation on safety meetings and monitoring HSE compliance

Equipment maintenance coordination and work orders

Estimating assistance

Timekeeping and invoicing

Training coordination and onboarding of new personnel

Qualifications

Post-secondary degree in technical field relating to construction or mining is preferred

Mining or Civil Engineering or Technical degrees are preferred

Excellent computer skills including excel and other Microsoft packages

Excellent excel skills

Preference will be given to candidates who have field experience with heavy civil work

Must be legally allowed to work in Canada

Must have a valid driver's license

Must provide a current driver's abstract

Must comply with Dene North's Pre-Employment testing

Plan, direct, coordinate on-site engineering and construction activities of designated project(s) to ensure that goals and/or objectives are accomplished within specified timeframe and funding parameters

Obtain field data related to production activities, create and manage customer cost and productivity reports and other determined deliverables, providing feedback to Project Manager

Oversee and provide support for production, safety, quality and project management standards

Work with crews and subcontractors to manage project costs and meet scheduled deliverables and timelines

Directly supervise subcontractors and vendors on the project site

Arrange, attend and/or facilitate pre-construction and status meetings

Qualifications:

2-3 years experience working as a site or project engineer assigned to heavy civil, infrastructure projects

5-10 years engineering and construction project experience

Excellent computer skills including proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, etc.)

Excellent team, interpersonal and communications skills, both written and oral
